White Pony Express (WPE) has become an integral part of the food and clothing provider network in Contra Costa County and is most deserving of the Outstanding Collaborative Project Award.

Since their involvement in the community began, organizations including Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa County, the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program (GRIP), and Monument Impact have benefited greatly.

White Pony’s 400 volunteers have partnered with more than 100 food donors, including Whole Foods, Nob Hill Foods, Trader Joe’s, Safeway, Costco, Sprouts Farmers Market, Walmart, Walgreen’s, and local farmers markets to help distribute “surplus” food.

The quality and quantity of food available to East Bay nonprofits has increased significantly since WPE began its work. Loaves and Fishes increased their distribution from 60 tons to 135 tons of food per year with a larger percentage of fresh produce incorporated into their meals since they began working with WPE. Likewise, GRIP has received 62,000 pounds of food from WPE since their partnership began two years ago allowing them to keep a well-stocked kitchen facility open 365 days a year.

In addition to the food recovery program, WPE has also launched a Free General Store focused on distributing new and gently used clothing items, toys, and children’s books. At Monument Impact’s Health Fair, WPE volunteers distributed 5,000 items of clothing and 1,600 toys and games for children in one day.

WPE, in partnership with more than 50 other nonprofit agencies, has delivered 1.7 million pounds of food and 100,000 items of clothing, books, and toys.

An incredible result made possible by a contagious spirit of giving that surrounds this outstanding organization.
