Take the Juneteenth pledge

Why pledge
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The progress made in Congress this week to make Juneteenth a federal holiday is a positive step, but we can and should do more as East Bay business leaders to elevate this day on the calendar. We believe Juneteenth should be recognized as a paid holiday for employees as a day to celebrate freedom, learn our history, advocate for racial justice, and come together as a community.

Who can pledge
Our goal is to receive pledges from designated business representatives who attest that their company is committing to the pledge. However, we also welcome individuals who are committed to being allies to the cause.

The pledge

  • We will make Juneteenth a paid holiday for all employees.

  • We will support Black-owned businesses and invest in the community.

  • We will educate ourselves and others on the history of Juneteenth.

As businesses reopen at full capacity across California this week, there is still work to be done to ensure more people are protected from COVID-19. In an effort to help answer questions that millions of people are asking -- two of Contra Costa's largest healthcare providers are teaming up to share answers from medical experts.

Questions include

  • Is it free?

  • How do vaccines protect me?

  • How do we know vaccines are safe?

  • Can my body build protection without a vaccine?

Must Read // Bay Area greets COVID reopening day with optimism, wariness

California’s much-anticipated reopening date arrived Tuesday, bringing with it the end of most pandemic-related business restrictions and mask requirements for those who are vaccinated against COVID-19.

“It’s really celebratory,” said Grace David, who danced at the Colma party in a glittery silver and gold flapper dress and called the day “freeing.”

But while Gov. Gavin Newsom marked the occasion in a swirl of confetti at Universal Studios in Los Angeles County, there were no ticker tape parades declaring victory over COVID-19 in the Bay Area.
